Pune: Trap Cameras, Thermal Drone Pressed Into Service After Leopard Spotted in Keshav Nagar

Keshav Nagar, 18th December 2025: Panic gripped residents of Pune’s Keshav Nagar area after a leopard was sighted in at least three housing societies during the early hours of Thursday. The animal was reportedly seen between 2 am and 4.30 am, with CCTV footage from residential complexes going viral on social media, raising concerns about public safety.

Sudhir Srivastav, Chairman of Konark Riva Society and Director of the Keshav Nagar Welfare Association, confirmed the leopard sighting in a video statement. He urged residents to remain alert, avoid venturing out alone at night, and follow safety advisories issued by authorities.

Following the sightings, teams from the Forest Department, RESQ, and Pune Police were informed and immediately mobilised. Search and monitoring operations are currently underway in the area.

In an official statement issued at 6 pm, the Pune Forest Department said forest staff are conducting an extensive search operation in and around Keshav Nagar. CCTV footage from multiple housing societies is being examined to trace the leopard’s movement pattern. Officials noted the presence of a nearby nala with dense vegetation, which is suspected to be a possible hiding spot. Trap cameras have been installed in the area as a precautionary measure.

The Forest Department also stated that a thermal drone will be deployed after evening hours to aid the search operation. Public awareness activities have been carried out to inform residents about safety protocols and precautionary measures.

Night patrolling will begin from Thursday night in Keshav Nagar, Mundhwa, and surrounding localities. Special teams have been formed to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of residents.

Authorities have appealed to citizens not to panic, avoid spreading rumours, and immediately report any leopard sightings to the Forest Department (helpline 1926).
