Pune University Senate Members Demand Central Kitchen, Drug Awareness Workshop

Pune, 21st March 2025: The senate members of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have proposed the establishment of a central kitchen to ensure uniform food quality across all university canteens. A resolution has been submitted in this regard. Additionally, members have called for a workshop on drug awareness following the discovery of marijuana and alcohol bottles in the university’s hostel.
The SPPU budget session is scheduled for March 22, and ahead of this, senate members have put forth various resolutions addressing critical issues on campus. Concerns over food contamination in university canteens have been raised in the past, with incidents of cockroaches and worms found in food. In response, the student union had previously shut down the canteen. To tackle this issue, senate member Prasenjit Fadnavis has proposed setting up a central kitchen to standardize and improve food quality.
A recent shocking discovery of marijuana, cigarette packets, and alcohol bottles in the girls’ hostel of Pune University has raised concerns about campus security and supervision. This has prompted senate member Dr. Aparna Lalingkar to propose a workshop aimed at educating students about the dangers of drug abuse and implementing preventive measures.

Jeevansadhana Gaurav Awards Selection Criteria
The Jeevansadhana Gaurav Awards, which honor individuals for outstanding achievements in various fields, have reportedly been awarded in bulk without a defined selection process. Senate members have demanded the formation of a selection committee and the establishment of clear criteria for these awards.
Full-Time Officers for Placement Cell & Career Counseling
Members have also urged the university to appoint full-time officers for the Placement Cell and Career Counseling Center to enhance job placement and career guidance services for students.
With these proposed resolutions, SPPU senate members aim to improve campus facilities, ensure student welfare, and enhance the university’s academic and administrative standards.
