Pune, 12th October 2026: The Vishrambaug police have issued notices to paying guest (PG) accommodation operators in Budhwar Peth and adjoining areas, directing them to submit documents and details of students staying at their premises within 24 hours of receiving the notice.

The police have warned of action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against those who fail to comply with the directions.

The notice, issued on October 9 in the name of Vishrambaug police station senior inspector Navnath Jagtap, is part of a citywide exercise to collect information about people staying in hostels, PG accommodations and rented rooms. The move aims to monitor the presence of suspicious individuals and those with criminal backgrounds, and prevent untoward incidents, against the backdrop of bomb blasts and terror attacks reported in Pune and elsewhere in the country.

PG operators have been directed to submit the name and complete address of their establishments, contact numbers, copies of permissions obtained from the relevant authorities, and copies of rental agreements between property owners and tenants.

The police have also made online tenant verification mandatory for all students staying in hostels and PG accommodations. Operators must submit copies of students’ Aadhaar cards, identity cards issued by their libraries or coaching academies, and lists containing their names, addresses and contact numbers.

The notice further directs hostel and PG operators to install CCTV cameras at appropriate locations and preserve the footage for at least 60 days. They have also been advised to accept rent from students or tenants, either fully or partially, through online payment modes.

Meanwhile, MLA Rohit Pawar claimed that the notice had been issued in connection with the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) protest. He claimed that the hostel owners were being targeted as many students living in these facilities were participating in the protest against the MPSC Chief Vivek Bhimanwar.
