Pune, 12th October 2022: Returning monsoon has begun in Pune city in the last few days. Due to the rain, multiple cases of falling trees and water accumulation have occurred.

Reportedly, every year at specific spots, rainwater gets accumulated, resulting in flood-like situations in the city. Cases of water accumulation have been reported in Kalyani Nagar and Viman Nagar, among others. The Viman Nagar area is facing critical issues like water accumulation and flood-like situations every year. Citizens have complained regarding the same to the ward office of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), but they have not received satisfactory results.

Talking to PunekarNews.in, Umesh Magar, a shop owner in the Viman Nagar area, informed that every year the citizens complain to PMC regarding the dreadful situation, but every year the picture is the same. “PMC indeed sent the workers to clean the water accumulated on the road, but other than that, they have not provided any permanent solution on this issue,” said Umesh.

Qaneez Sukhrani, Convenor of Viman Nagar Citizens Forum, said, “Every year, citizens of Viman Nagar face these issues. PMC sent their workers and what they are doing is superficial work. They are not correctly doing the work. We need a permanent solution. Due to the superficial work of PMC, this issue is creating a fuss in the area.”

“We need to understand that the population of Viman Nagar is increasing, and hence, we need to repair and reconstruct the water drainage pipes, which are 20-30 years old with a very small diameter,” she added further.

Sukhrani further informed, “The accumulated water is not just from the heavy rain, it is also seen that the underground pipes of water drainage breaks and water comes up to the road. PMC needs to consider this matter as soon as possible. Otherwise, the cycle is going to repeat every year.”

Bankar Somnath, Ward Officer, PMC, said he will look into the matter as soon as possible. He also stated that a permanent solution will be provided to the citizens soon. “We will try to manage the issue on the ward level, but if it is necessary, I will personally take this matter to headquarters,” Somnath told PunekarNews.in.
