Pune, 19th June 2025: Amid rising public complaints of severe waterlogging in Hinjawadi Phases 1, 2, and 3, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has taken direct action against builders, companies, and citizens responsible for unauthorized constructions that have disrupted the natural flow of streams and drains. These illegal alterations have been blamed for rainwater accumulation on roads, including along the metro route, causing hardships for commuters and local residents.

In a high-level joint meeting held on Thursday at the PMRDA office in Akurdi, Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Yogesh Mhase, MP Shrirang Barne, and MLA Shankar Mandekar issued strict directives to officials from multiple departments to immediately complete ongoing works related to drainage, road repair, and public amenities.

“We have identified around 15 locations where the natural water channels were disturbed by unauthorized construction. These acts are not only illegal but have endangered urban safety during the monsoon,” said Dr. Mhase during the meeting.

“Immediate legal action must be taken, and such construction activities must be stopped,” he added.

Key Issues and Ongoing Works
Due to continuous rain, waterlogging in Hinjawadi and along the metro line has worsened in recent weeks. Since then, multiple civic bodies including MIDC, MPCB, Pune ITCT Metro Rail Ltd, and local gram panchayats have taken steps to resolve the situation. Notable ongoing efforts include:
Drain Cleaning along the metro corridor by MIDC, particularly near Sai Provisio building, Dohler Company, and Metro Station 2.
Removal of unauthorized stalls near Metro Station 1.
Action against Vilas Javadekar’s project, including notice issuance and removal of illegal ramps at Station 3.
Streetlight repair and shifting work with MIDC, Tata Projects, and PMRDA engineers.
Debris removal from metro sites including Pandavnagar, Hinjawadi Phase 2.
Installation of directional signages and boards by Tata Company.
Pothole filling and drain unclogging across key routes by Metro Concessionaire Company and MIDC.
Streetlights installed on Nande–Chande Road, with additional infrastructure upgrades ongoing.

Citizens’ Feedback and Satisfaction
Local residents and society representatives from Hinjawadi, Maan, and Marunji attended the meeting and shared their grievances directly with the authorities. Many acknowledged the improvement efforts over the past week but stressed the need for long-term planning to prevent repeat flooding.

“The repair works are welcome, but unless accountability is enforced on developers and long-term drainage planning is implemented, these monsoon disruptions will keep returning,” said a resident from Melange Society, Hinjawadi Phase 2.

Officers in Attendance
The meeting was attended by PMRDA Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Deepak Singla, Chief Engineers Rinaj Pathan and Nitin Wankhede, representatives from MIDC, PWD, MPCB, Tata Company, and various resident welfare associations.

As monsoon intensity increases, the PMRDA has vowed to complete emergency works on war footing and hold accountable those responsible for altering natural drainage paths without approval.
