Pune: Will This New Flyover Save Sinhagad Road From Metro Traffic Chaos? PMC Targets Early Opening
Sinhgad Road, 16th July 2026: With the Rajaram Bridge–Fun Time flyover now operational and helping ease congestion on Sinhagad Road, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has accelerated work on the Sun City–Karvenagar flyover to improve traffic flow before Metro construction begins on the corridor.
According to PMC Project Department head Dinkar Gojare, the civic body aims to open the flyover within the next two-and-a-half months. The move comes as Maha Metro is expected to begin construction of the Khadakwasla–Kharadi Metro corridor along Sinhagad Road in the coming months, a project likely to add to traffic pressure in the area.
Gojare said the progress of the flyover project will be reviewed daily to ensure timely completion.
The project, which began nearly two years ago, is about 80 per cent complete. PMC has also initiated the land acquisition process for the approach roads on both sides of the structure.
Once operational, vehicles travelling from the Ganga Bhagyodaya Chowk side of Sinhagad Road will be able to directly access Karvenagar and Karve Road via the flyover. This is expected to eliminate a detour of around three kilometres, significantly reducing travel time and easing congestion on Sinhagad Road.
The civic administration believes that completing the flyover before Metro work begins will provide a crucial alternative route for commuters travelling from Dhayari, Nanded City and adjoining areas, helping minimise disruption during the construction phase.
However, local residents have urged Maha Metro to defer the start of Metro construction until the flyover is opened, arguing that it is necessary to maintain smooth traffic movement on the already congested corridor.
Land acquisition remains a key challenge
While the flyover is nearing completion, another challenge remains in Karvenagar, where land acquisition for the connecting roads is still pending in several stretches.
After the flyover opens, a substantial volume of traffic is expected to enter Karvenagar. However, incomplete road widening and pending land acquisition along the Shivane–Kharadi Road, which connects to Karve Road and the Development Plan (DP) Road, could create a bottleneck in the area.
Residents have therefore demanded that the flyover should not be opened until the link roads are completed, warning that otherwise congestion may simply shift from Sinhagad Road to Karvenagar.
PMC’s Road Department and the City Engineer’s Office have initiated the process of acquiring the remaining land parcels to complete the connecting road network before the flyover becomes operational.
