Katraj, 13th May 2025: A woman from Pune’s Katraj area has fallen victim to a sophisticated online task scam, losing Rs 9.5 lakh to cyber fraudsters who lured her with the promise of lucrative work-from-home opportunities. The incident, which has been registered at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station, highlights the growing menace of cybercrime targeting individuals seeking online employment.

According to police, the victim received a message on her mobile phone in December last year, offering daily earnings of Rs 1,500 to Rs 6,000 for promoting advertisements of reputed hotels on social media platforms. After successfully completing an initial task and receiving a credit of Rs 7,500 to her bank account, she was convinced of the scheme’s legitimacy. The fraudsters then persuaded her to invest more money in subsequent online tasks, assuring even higher returns. Over the next four to five months, she transferred a total of Rs 9.5 lakh to the scammers’ bank accounts, only to realize she had been duped when no further payments were received.

Bharati Vidyapeeth Police are investigating the matter further.
