Bhosalenagar, 13th January 2024: A 47-year-old woman residing in Bhosalenagar, Pune, reported a loss of Rs 2.18 lakh to an online fraudster while attempting to return a defective dress she had purchased online, according to her complaint filed with the Chatushrungi police on Thursday.

The unfortunate incident began when the woman ordered a dress from an e-commerce website in August of the previous year. Discovering that the dress was defective, she decided to initiate the return process and, in October, found a contact number for the website online. Upon making the call, a person on the other end, posing as an employee of the e-commerce company, assured her that the dress would be returned, and she would receive a refund.

An officer from the Chatushrungi police revealed, “The woman shared her bank details with the supposed employee in October 2023, believing it was necessary for the refund process. Unfortunately, the scammer misused these details, siphoning off Rs 2.18 lakh from her bank account during that time.”

The Chatushrungi police have registered a case under Section 419 (cheating by personation), Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act in connection with this fraudulent activity.
