Pune: Woman with Guillain-Barre Syndrome Dies of Pneumonia in Pimpri-Chinchwad

Pimpri, 25th January 2025: A 64-year-old woman infected with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) passed away in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Tuesday, January 21. The woman, who was admitted to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital, succumbed to pneumonia, which developed as a complication of GBS.
According to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the woman’s death was officially attributed to pneumonia. She was among the 13 reported cases of GBS in the city. Of these, six patients have recovered and been discharged, while five are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals.
The woman was first diagnosed with GBS on November 17 and initially received treatment at a private hospital. Experiencing breathing difficulties, she was later transferred to Dr. D. Y. Patil Hospital on November 24. During this period, she also developed pneumonia, complicating her condition further.
On December 29, she was shifted to YCM Hospital for intensive care. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, her condition deteriorated, and she passed away during treatment. “The woman died of pneumonia,” confirmed Dr. Rajendra Wable, Dean of YCM Hospital.
