Pune: Yellowish tap water in Yerawada, Vadgaon Sheri triggers PMC Advisory, Residents Urged to Boil Water As Precaution
Pune, 27th May 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has urged residents in several parts of the city to filter and boil tap water before consumption after reports of yellowish water emerged from the distribution network.
The issue has been reported mainly from Ahilyanagar Road and adjoining areas, including Dhanori, Tingrenagar, Vishrantwadi, Yerawada and Vadgaon Sheri. Officials said the discoloration is linked to raw water conditions at Bhama Askhed Dam, influenced by fluctuating storage levels, recent unseasonal rains and algal growth at the source.
Water drawn from Bhama Askhed Dam is treated at PMC’s Kuruli water purification plant before being supplied to these areas.
According to PMC water supply department head Nandkishkore Jagtap, complaints of yellow-tinted water have been received over the past few days. He said the colour intensity of raw water has increased after rainfall in the catchment area, rising from earlier levels of around 5–10 Hazen units to nearly 30–40 Hazen units.
Officials said lower reservoir levels, weather conditions and algae formation have contributed to the issue. While treatment processes have been strengthened with increased alum dosing, complete removal of colour is taking time. The normal standard for treated water is around 4–5 Hazen units.
Jagtap said the present colour level has now reduced to about 10 Hazen units, but some discoloured water may still remain in pipelines and overhead tanks due to system carryover. He added it may take 3–4 days for the supply network to fully stabilise.
He further clarified that chlorine levels and other quality parameters are within permissible limits and no bacterial contamination has been detected, making the water safe for drinking after boiling.
PMC also noted that some local distribution line defects, unrelated to the treatment plant, have been found in affected pockets and repair work is underway.
