Pune: Yerwada Jail Has Three Times More Prisoners Than Its Capacity – Amitabh Gupta
Pune, 13th January 2023: Maharashtra Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) Amitabh Gupta has said that a proposal has been sent to the state government to create additional barracks at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune so that the prison can accommodate more prisoners.
He informed that the number of prisoners in Yerwada Central Jail is almost three times more than the capacity. According to the Prison Department data, Yerwada Jail had 6,854 prisoners in November 2022, while the jail can hold 2,449 prisoners.
Maharashtra has a total of 60 prisons, including nine central prisons. According to the data, in November 2022, the total number of prisoners in these jails was 40,718 while their capacity to hold 24,722 prisoners.
Talking to reporters, Gupta said, “The proposal to construct additional barracks in Yerwada Jail was sent to the state government a few days ago. Apart from this, there is a need to build more jails in the state. Government is also serious about the said issue.”
