Pune Zilla Parishad to Convert All 121 Primary Health Centres into Model PHCs
Pune, 30th September 2026: The Pune Zilla Parishad is implementing the ‘Pune Model PHC Project’ to transform all 121 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in the district into modern, citizen-centric healthcare facilities, with a focus on improved infrastructure, quality healthcare services and digital health management.
Under the project, 55 PHCs were converted into Model PHCs last year, while the remaining centres are scheduled to be developed this year. The centres are being upgraded in accordance with the latest Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS).
Modern infrastructure and patient-centric facilities
The Model PHC project focuses not only on renovation of existing buildings but also on strengthening the overall healthcare delivery system.
The upgraded centres are being equipped with facilities such as modular operation theatres, modular delivery rooms, modern furniture, spacious waiting areas, improved corridors and other amenities for patients.
The initiative aims to provide patients in rural areas with a safer, cleaner and more comfortable healthcare environment closer to their homes.
Digital health management system
A Hospital Information Management System (HIMS) is also being implemented at Model PHCs to facilitate the digital management of patient information, healthcare services and various institutional processes.
The system is expected to support efficient data collection, service management and healthcare delivery at the primary healthcare level.
Focus on national quality standards
The Zilla Parishad is also focusing on implementing national-level quality standards at PHCs.
Three PHCs in the district have received NABH accreditation, while 15 PHCs have obtained NQAS (National Quality Assurance Standards) certification.
The accreditation and certification processes are aimed at strengthening adherence to prescribed standards related to patient safety, cleanliness, service delivery, quality control and healthcare management.
Telemedicine services at three PHCs
Telemedicine facilities have been introduced at three PHCs to provide specialist medical consultation to residents of remote and underserved areas.
Through the service, patients receiving treatment locally can consult specialist doctors remotely whenever required, reducing the need to travel to larger healthcare facilities for specialist advice.
Government funds and CSR support
The Model PHC project is being implemented through coordinated utilisation of funds from the District Planning Committee (DPC), National Health Mission (NHM) and the Zilla Parishad cess fund.
The Zilla Parishad cess fund is also being used as supplementary funding for furniture, equipment and other requirements.
In addition, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding is being utilised to support the provision of medical equipment and solar electrification of PHCs and sub-centres.
The coordination of government and CSR funding is intended to accelerate the modernisation of rural healthcare infrastructure in the district.
Focus on rural and remote areas
The project aims to provide accessible, modern and reliable primary healthcare services close to the homes of rural residents, particularly those living in hilly, remote and geographically challenging areas.
Through upgraded operation theatres and delivery rooms, modern furniture and waiting areas, digital hospital information systems, telemedicine services and national-level quality certifications, the Pune Zilla Parishad is working to strengthen the district’s rural healthcare system and make primary healthcare services more modern and citizen-centric.
