Pune, 15th February 2022: Amruta Fadnavis, the wife of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, was in the headlines for her bizzare statement that three percent of divorce cases in Mumbai are due to traffic jams.

Following her statement, a man from Pune on Twitter asked how many divorce cases happened in Pune University Area due to traffic. He tweeted;

“पुणे युनिव्हर्सिटी चौकातील ट्रॅफिक मुळे किती घटस्फोट झाले याची माहिती मिळू शकेल का”

Under this particular tweet, citizens spend time to react and retweet.

Some of the citizens retweeted saying, “The road is more famous for marriage proposals as the road has more bachelors as compared to married or aged people”,

“You should ask Ajit Pawar”,

“That is why Rahul Gandhi chose not to marry. What if he got married, got stuck in traffic, and next day we got to know that he is getting divorced”.

One person tweeted, “Wife of Punekars do not give divorce that easily. They will lock the door if you are late”, etc.

Amruta Fadnavis had said that due to the traffic people are unable to give time to their families and as a result, the data shows 3% of divorces in Mumbai take place because of this reason.

“I’m saying this as a common citizen. Once I go out I see several issues including potholes, traffic. Due to traffic, people are unable to give time to their families and 3% of divorces in Mumbai are happening due to it.”

She further added “Forget that I am the wife of Devendra Fadnavis. I am talking to you as a woman. I have also experienced traffic on the roads and the potholes and how they trouble us.”

The statement of Fadnavis was criticized by Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, who replied, Fadnavis’ statement is “astonishing”.

Beyond political lines, citizens too joined in to share memes and jokes wondering how she reached the point. It also led to people from other cities weighing in, debating which city in India has the worst traffic jams and if couples residing there ever listed it as a valid reason. “Bangalore folks are all divorced,” wrote a Twitter user reacting to her statement. “Just checked with my lawyer in case I can provide this as a valid reason,” another joked.

Without anointing Fadnavis, Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi also quipped that Bengaluru families should avoid reading about the claim. She tweeted; “Best (il)logic of the day award goes to the lady who claims 3% Mumbaikars are divorcing due to traffic on roads. Please take a holiday break rather than having a mind on the brake”. Bengaluru families please avoid reading this, can prove fatal for your marriages,” she said, concluding the tweet with a laughing emoji.

It is seen that the nature of the reasons for filing for divorce has changed with the changing times. In Pune, it is reported that divorce claims are higher within five years of marriage. It is seen that the same situation is in Mumbai as well.

The number of divorces reported in Pune in the last three years;

In 2019, 3874 divorce cases were filed in which 1300 cases were filed with mutual consent. In 2020, the recorded cases for divorce were 2332 in which 676 cases were filed with mutual consent and in 2021, total divorce cases were reported as 3797 in which 2005 cases were filed with mutual consent. In the court, the ratio of divorce cases with mutual consent is increasing day by day. Couples do not even want to argue, so they file a divorce case with mutual consent.
