Pune’s 32 Major Roads and 22 Junctions Under Traffic Decongestion Drive
Pune, 24th September 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated measures to reduce traffic congestion in the city. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram chaired a meeting today at the Standing Committee Hall, focusing on traffic issues that can be addressed without involving land acquisition.
The review covered 32 major city roads and 22 key junctions, which together carry nearly 85% of Pune’s traffic. Task forces of engineers from various departments had earlier conducted site inspections and submitted reports identifying bottlenecks.
During the two-hour meeting, officials discussed several steps to ease traffic flow, including removal of unauthorized parking and trees obstructing movement, relocation of street vendors to designated markets, clearing footpath encroachments, optimizing bus stops and bus bays, managing metro-related disruptions, and eliminating unnecessary U-turns. It was emphasized that enforcement against encroachments must be carried out jointly by the Municipal Corporation, Traffic Police, and Police Department.
Since most of these interventions require minimal funding, the Commissioner directed departments to implement them immediately and submit a progress report within a month. A review meeting will then be held to assess the impact. The measures are expected to improve traffic flow in the city by 10–20%.
Senior officials present included Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil, Additional Municipal Commissioners M.J. Pradeep Chandran and Omprakash Divte, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav, the City Engineer, Chief Engineer (Roads), as well as department heads and engineers from Roads, Construction, Water Supply, Electricity, Sewerage, and Encroachments. Officials from ward and zone offices also participated.
