Pune’s Dagdusheth Ganpati Temple Dazzles With Floral Sheshnag Decorations For Sheshatmaj Ganesh Jayanti
Pune, 30th May 2025: On the occasion of Sheshatmaj Ganesh Jayanti, the revered Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple in Pune was adorned with breathtaking floral decorations, drawing hundreds of devotees. The centerpiece of the celebration was an intricate installation of Sheshnag replicas made entirely of vibrant flowers. The silver idol of Lord Ganesha was beautifully enshrined amidst the floral Sheshnag, creating a spiritually uplifting and visually captivating atmosphere.
Sheshatmaj Jayanti marks the birth of Lord Ganesha’s Sheshatmaj incarnation, believed to have originated in the netherworld (Patal Lok). According to tradition, it is celebrated on the Chaturthi of the Jyeshtha month, holding equal significance in the Ganpatya tradition as the Ganesh Jayantis in Bhadrapada and Magha months.
The day began early with sacred rituals at the temple. At 3 am, the Brahmanaspati Sukta Abhishek was performed in the presence of the temple’s Brahmavrund. This was followed by a devotional musical performance (Swarabhishek) at 4 am, offered by renowned vocalist Pt. Kaivalya Kumar Gurav. Additional religious ceremonies such as the Ganesh Yag, Sahasravartan, and Ganesh Jag also took place throughout the day.
Speaking on the significance of the day, temple trust vice president Mahesh Suryawanshi explained the legend behind Sheshatmaj. According to mythology, during the creation of the universe, Lord Brahma became captivated by his own creation. From this divine state, a child emerged from his nostrils, whom Brahma named “Mayakar” and endowed with extraordinary boons. Mayakar eventually became the king of demons, overpowering the earth, heavens, and even threatening the underworld. When all hope was lost, Lord Shesh himself invoked Lord Ganesha to restore balance. This avatar of Ganesha is thus revered as the divine protector of the netherworld.
