Pune’s Electric Vehicle Sales Surge by 60,000 Units, Totaling 92,402 in 2024

Pune, 14th January 2025: Pune has emerged as a frontrunner in Maharashtra’s electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with sales skyrocketing to 92,402 units in 2024, marking a significant increase of nearly 60,000 vehicles compared to the previous year. This surge in EV popularity is attributed to rising fuel prices, growing environmental consciousness, and the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles.
According to data from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO), the city now boasts approximately 3,00,000 electric vehicles on its roads, a substantial portion of the total 40 lakh registered vehicles in Pune. This rapid growth is particularly noteworthy given that in 2021, only 8,668 EVs were registered in the city.
Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer of Pune, stated, “The government’s decision to completely waive motor vehicle tax on electric vehicles has made them more affordable. Coupled with increased production, this has led to a significant rise in EV sales.”
The EV market in Pune is primarily dominated by two-wheelers, followed by four-wheelers, with buses and auto-rickshaws seeing comparatively lower demand. This trend aligns with the broader pattern observed across Maharashtra, where two-wheelers constitute the majority of EV sales.
Infrastructure development has kept pace with the growing EV adoption. Pune has seen a substantial increase in charging stations, addressing one of the primary concerns of potential EV buyers. The city now leads Maharashtra in EV infrastructure, hosting 1,894 of the state’s 3,073 charging stations as of January 2025.
This rapid growth in Pune is part of a larger trend across Maharashtra. The state has set ambitious targets in its Electric Vehicle Policy 2021, aiming for EVs to constitute 10% of new vehicle registrations by 2025. The policy offers attractive incentives, including a 15% subsidy on EV purchases, capped at specific amounts for different vehicle categories.
The surge in EV adoption in Pune is driven by several factors:
1. Increase in EV manufacturing companies
2. Greater variety of electric two-wheeler and four-wheeler options
3. Significant savings in fuel costs
4. Improved availability of charging stations
5. Growing preference for environmentally friendly vehicles
