The monsoon officially reached the Nicobar Islands on Tuesday, marking its first landfall in India. This has led to an increase in pre-monsoon activity across regions like the Sahyadri Ghats and the Deccan Maharashtra belt, including Pune, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Sambhajinagar, Solapur, and Kolhapur.
“Scattered thunderstorms and pre-monsoon showers are likely to persist until May 18,” an IMD official stated. “The rainfall pattern is expected to remain unpredictable, with more activity in the Ghats and leeward regions rather than along the coast.”
A wind discontinuity, which occurs when winds from different directions or with varying characteristics meet, is fueling the instability in the atmosphere, potentially triggering convective showers.
The temperatures across Pune city and its surrounding areas have remained moderate, with maximum temperatures ranging from 31°C to 33°C, and minimum temperatures between 21°C and 25°C.
The IMD has issued a warning for thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds (30-50 km/h) in isolated locations across Pune, the Ghats of Pune, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara. “A yellow warning has been issued for these regions,” the official added, advising caution.
Residents can expect further such weather patterns in the coming days.
