Pune’s Online Rummy Craze Takes Dark Turn: Servant Steals Rs 38 Lakh To Fuel Addiction

Pune, 22nd August 2023: The allure of winning lakhs of rupees through rummy game apps on social media platforms has led to a disheartening trend of scams and financial losses. As unsuspecting individuals fall victim to this temptation, instances of cheating involving sums in lakhs of rupees have become disturbingly common.

In a recent incident in Pune’s Aundh area, a servant pilfered a staggering Rs 38 lakh from his employer’s residence, succumbing to his online rummy addiction. The accused, identified as Manish Roy, has since been apprehended.

Senior Police Inspector Balaji Pandhare of Chatushrungi police station said that the accused, Manish Roy, hails from West Bengal and had been employed as a domestic help in the household of Trimbakrao Patil, residing in the Aundh area. Despite drawing a respectable salary, Manish Roy’s infatuation with online rummy proved financially ruinous. His initial gains from the game incentivized him to venture into high-stakes matches, where he subsequently suffered losses amounting to approximately Rs 23 lakh.

The mounting debt and desperation drove Manish Roy to commit a grave crime. Recognizing an opportunity, he orchestrated a theft in Trimbakrao Patil’s home, surreptitiously making off with 55 tolas of gold and Rs 11 lakhs in cash, aggregating to a substantial sum of Rs 38 lakhs. Following the victim’s prompt reporting of the incident, the police swiftly swung into action, managing to apprehend the accused Manish Roy.
