Rain and Thunderstorms to Accompany Rising Temperatures in Pune

Pune, 27th December 2024: The city has experienced a dramatic shift in weather, with minimum temperatures rising significantly over the past week. This unseasonable warmth is now set to culminate in rain, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms, as forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
On Thursday, Pune’s Shivajinagar area recorded a minimum temperature of 17.4°C, a sharp rise of nearly 5°C from last week’s readings and over 6°C above the seasonal average. Lohgaon saw even higher deviations, with the minimum temperature reaching 19.4°C, 8.4°C above normal. Koregaon Park and Magarpatta registered 20.9°C and 21.8°C, respectively.
The IMD has attributed this warming trend to a developing weather system. Light rain with thunderstorms and isolated hailstorms is predicted for Friday and Saturday across several parts of Maharashtra, including Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.
“A western disturbance over the northern regions, combined with easterly winds, is drawing moisture from the Arabian Sea,” explained a weather official. “This interaction is creating conditions conducive to rain and thunderstorms, particularly between December 27 and 28.”
The IMD noted that a cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and a trough extending across the Arabian Sea are playing key roles in the current weather patterns. These systems are causing a significant influx of moisture, leading to the predicted rainfall and localized hailstorms.
With relative humidity in areas like Lavale and NDA reaching 100% and temperatures remaining well above average, the city is bracing for a wet and stormy end to the week.
