Rainy Weather Reduces Demand and Prices of Fruits and Vegetables in Pune
Pune, 15th July 2024: The recent rains have led to a significant decrease in the demand for fruits and vegetables, resulting in lower prices. However, the demand for groundnut pods has surged due to Ashadhi Ekadashi celebrations.
On Sunday, July 14, Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard saw arrival of 90 truckloads of fruits and vegetables arriving from Maharashtra and other states. This included 10 tempos of green chillies from Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh; 1 tempo of Totapuri mangoes from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu; 2 tempos of cabbage from Karnataka and Gujarat; 3 tempos each of beans and cluster beans from Karnataka; and 5 tempos of drumsticks from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Market Yard trader Nikhil Bhujbal reported additional imports, including 9 tempos of carrots from Indore and 5 tempos of garlic from other parts of Madhya Pradesh.
The market also received 500 sacks of Satari ginger from Pune division, 5 tempos each of okra, guar, cabbage, and cucumber, 5,000 boxes of tomatoes, 3 tempos of green chillies, 10 tempos of coarse chillies, 5 tempos of cucumbers, 8 tempos of flowers, 200 sacks of groundnut pods, 10 tempos of red pumpkin, 2 tempos of Gawran mangoes, 100 trucks of onions, and 40 tempos of potatoes from Indore, Agra, and local areas.
The vegetable section of the market yard experienced a large influx of leafy vegetables, further contributing to the price drop. Fenugreek prices fell by ₹13 per bundle, while coriander, shepu, and spring onions (kandapati) prices decreased by ₹5 per bundle. Spinach prices dropped by ₹3, and the prices of amaranth, chuka, and chavalai were reduced by ₹2 each.
On Sunday, the market received one and a half lakh bundles of coriander and one lakh bundles of fenugreek. The rains have soaked many leafy vegetables, affecting their quality and grading. However, traders noted a steady demand for high-quality leafy vegetables despite the overall price decline.
The weather-induced changes in supply and demand dynamics have significantly impacted the prices of fruits and vegetables in Pune, reflecting the season’s influence on the market.
