Rape Case at Swargate Bus Stand Sparks Political Uproar in Pune
Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Pune, 26th February 2025: The rape of a 26-year-old woman at Swargate bus stand has triggered widespread outrage across Maharashtra, with opposition parties launching a scathing attack on the ruling BJP over the deteriorating law and order situation in Pune. The incident has put the BJP on the defensive, especially as it comes just days after a Union Minister’s aide was attacked by gang members, raising concerns over public safety in the city.
According to police reports, the victim had arrived at the Swargate bus stand on Tuesday early morning, intending to board a bus to Phaltan. A man offered to help her find the right bus, but instead, he led her to a Shivshahi bus, locked the doors, and raped her. Following the horrific assault, a case was registered at Swargate Police Station, and the investigation is underway.
As soon as news of the incident broke, Pune witnessed a wave of public anger. Workers of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) staged a protest at the bus stand. During the demonstration, former corporator Vasant More vandalized the security guard’s cabin, escalating tensions and turning the protest violent.
The BJP, which is in power at both the state and central levels, is facing sharp criticism for its failure to curb rising crime. Pune, often regarded as a safe city for women, is now at the center of a political storm over security concerns.
The opposition has particularly targeted Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol, State Cabinet Minister Chandrakant Patil, and Minister of State for Transport Madhuri Misal, all of whom hail from Pune. Critics argue that despite holding key ministerial positions, these leaders have failed to maintain law and order, as serious crimes continue to occur in broad daylight.
Just a few days ago, a close aide of Muralidhar Mohol was brutally attacked by members of the Marane gang, raising further questions about the government’s ability to maintain peace in Pune. With this latest rape case at a public transport hub, the BJP finds itself in a political dilemma, struggling to defend its governance amid mounting public outrage.
As anger intensifies, political leaders, women’s rights groups, and citizens are demanding swift action against the accused and stronger measures to ensure women’s safety in public spaces. The state government and law enforcement agencies are under immense pressure to restore public confidence and take decisive steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
With elections around the corner, this case has not only shaken Pune but has also become a major political flashpoint, with the opposition leveraging the issue to corner the BJP-led government over its handling of law and order.
