Reckless Driving in Pune Claims 278 Lives in 2024 Amid Rising Road Accidents
Pune, 25th December 2024: Unruly drivers with little regard for traffic rules and laws have recently caused havoc in Pune, leading to numerous road accidents and fatalities. This year alone, 278 lives have been lost in road accidents within the city. Most of these incidents occur on major routes such as the Pune-Ahilyanagar Highway, Pune-Solapur Highway, Katraj, Hadapsar, and Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass. Despite repeated social awareness campaigns by the traffic branch, the accidents persist due to motorists not following the rules.
The Pune City Police Commissionerate’s Traffic Branch has intensified efforts to reduce road accidents, especially following the Kalyani Nagar Porsche incident. These efforts include collaborating with government institutions like the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the Public Works Department (PWD), and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to improve road conditions and prevent accidents.
Accidents are often caused by reckless driving and deteriorating road infrastructure. The Traffic Branch has identified 19 black spots in Pune that are particularly prone to accidents. To address this, the Traffic Branch, District Administration, and NHAI are actively developing plans to mitigate these risks.
However, despite these efforts, the number of accidents continues to rise. Pune’s population has reached an all-time high, resulting in severe traffic congestion in the city and its suburbs. Coupled with reckless drivers and poor road conditions, this has created a dangerous environment where accidents frequently occur, claiming many innocent lives.
Amol Zende, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Traffic Branch, Pune Police, stated, “To ensure the smooth flow of traffic in Pune, the Traffic Branch is actively working to reduce accidents. However, some undisciplined bikers, car drivers, and heavy vehicle operators are disrupting traffic discipline. Strict action is regularly taken against such offenders. To minimize accidents, heavy vehicles have been banned on alternate days on the city’s main roads.”
