Pune, 27th January 2024: On this day, January 27, 2024, we pay tribute to Anand Dighe, a luminary in Maharashtra politics, on what would have been his birth anniversary. Fondly known as Dharmaveer, Dighe left an indelible mark on the political landscape.

Born on January 27, 1951, Anand Dighe’s journey in politics began at a young age. His meteoric rise saw him become the President of Shiv Sena’s Thane Unit in 1984. He wasn’t just a politician; he was a grassroots leader with a massive following. His daily Durbar at Tembhi Naka became a symbol of accessibility, where he addressed issues faced by Thane citizens alongside Shiv Sena party workers.

Notably, he mentored a cadre of young politicians from the Thane region, including Eknath Shinde, Ravindra Phatak, and Rajan Vichare. His influence extended beyond politics; he was a mentor, guide, and guardian for many.

However, Dighe’s political journey was not without controversy. Accused in the murder of Shiv Sena member Sridhar Khopkar, who allegedly voted for Congress in 1989, Dighe faced legal battles, including arrest under TADA. The case lingered until his demise.

Anand Dighe’s demise in 2001 marked the end of an era, triggering numerous conspiracy theories. In 2019, Narayan Rane raised questions about the circumstances of Dighe’s death. The controversies surrounding his passing added another layer to his enigmatic persona.

Dharmaveer’s legacy lives on, influencing the political landscape even today. His role as a mentor to Eknath Shinde, now the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, underscores the enduring impact of his guidance.

The Marathi movie “Dharmaveer,” depicting Anand Dighe’s life, was a game-changer in Maharashtra politics. It not only portrayed the intricacies of his political journey but also became a superhit, resonating with the masses.

On this day, as we remember Anand Dighe, let us reflect on his contributions, his mentorship, and the complex legacy he left behind. Dharmaveer’s imprint on Maharashtra politics remains etched in history, a testament to the power of leadership and the enduring impact of a political maestro.
