Residents Protest Outside Pub in Pune’s Mundhwa After Midnight Brawl, Demand Permanent Closure
Mundhwa, 18th August 2025: Tension gripped Mundhwa late Sunday night after a violent altercation outside Sway All Day Bar spiraled into a public protest, with angry residents demanding action against the pub and its owner.
The incident began when an allegedly drunk customer created chaos by smashing beer bottles on the road and assaulting a local resident. Eyewitnesses said the situation worsened when the pub owner allegedly threatened residents who confronted him.
“This is not the first time we are facing such trouble. Drunken fights, loud music, and nuisance outside pubs have become a nightmare for families here,” said former corporator Gauri Pingale, who led the protest. “The authorities cannot turn a blind eye anymore. We want this bar shut down permanently.”
As tempers flared, dozens of residents gathered at the pub’s entrance, shouting slogans and forcing it to close down. Police immediately rushed to the spot, cordoning off the premises and preventing the crowd from storming inside. Officers also evacuated customers to defuse the situation.
Later, residents marched to the Mundhwa police station, filing a formal complaint against the pub owner and urging authorities to cancel its license. Police confirmed that a case has been registered in connection with the incident.
Locals have long raised concerns over the “pub culture” in Pune, citing late-night noise, unruly behavior of inebriated patrons, and repeated violations of operating rules. “We are not against entertainment,” said a resident from the area. “But why should families suffer sleepless nights because of pubs that operate without accountability?”
The unrest comes amid renewed debate about Pune’s nightlife and the effectiveness of law enforcement. Residents point out that despite crackdowns following the infamous hit-and-run case last year, violations have crept back, leaving neighborhoods vulnerable.
Police officials said they are reviewing the matter and strict action will be taken against the bar owner if violations are confirmed.
