Pune, 9 April 2023: Rotary Club of Pune Laxmi Road and Revive Heart Foundation have launched ‘Project Dhadkan’, a three-week campaign to raise awareness about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The program was inaugurated by MLA Siddharth Shirole on Friday. Mr. Sunandan Lele, a renowned sports columnist, interviewed famous cardiologists Dr. Jagdish Hiremath and Dr. Sunil Sathe after a CPR demonstration.

Aniruddha Deshpande, MD Amanora, Dr. Rajeev Yerawdekar, Dean, Faculty of Health & Biomedical Sciences at Symbiosis International University, Dr. Vidya Yerawdekar, Pro Chancellor Symbiosis University, Ravi Kumar Chitnis VC MIT WPU, Dr. Kinjal Goyal, and Dr. Mukund Tupe were present at the event, along with Hemant Shirguppi, President of Rotary Club of Pune Laxmi Road, and Bhushan Kanani, Secretary of Rotary Club of Pune Laxmi Road.

MLA Siddharth Shirole emphasized the importance of CPR skills, especially during critical situations. He added that colleges should also promote CPR awareness, as it is an act of serving the nation, society, and humanity.

Project Dhadkan aims to spread CPR awareness in society. According to Dr. Hiremath, CPR is an effective first aid for cardiac arrest cases where the heart stops beating, and the brain and body do not receive blood. Since an ambulance cannot always reach the patient within the first few critical minutes, CPR can be life-saving. In addition, more than 70% of cardiac arrests happen in non-hospital settings, and CPR can double the victim’s chance of survival before the arrival of emergency services.

Dr. Sathe added that CPR training should be included in the curriculum of higher secondary and colleges to ensure minimal panic reaction, save crucial time, and increase the chances of survival.

This is the second edition of ‘Project Dhadkan’, with the previous year’s campaign reaching out to 5000 people. During the three-week program, starting from 8th to 29th April, Dr. Hiremath and his team will conduct CPR awareness sessions in several institutes, companies, and associations, and will donate and install five automated external defibrillator (AED) systems in public places. The initiative aims to make Pune the first and most cardiac-safe city in India.

The awareness program will conclude on 30th April. Dr. Paresh Gandhi was the event’s compere, and Rtn Parag Vohra delivered the vote of thanks.
