Viman Nagar, 28th April 2025: Major infrastructure developments for Pune International Airport were discussed during the Airport Advisory Committee (AAC) meeting held on Monday under the chairmanship of Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation and Pune MP, Murlidhar Mohol.

The meeting saw the participation of Wadgaon Sheri MLA and Deputy Chairman of the AAC, Bapusaheb Pathare, along with representatives from trade, industry, tourism, social sectors, and senior officials from civil and law enforcement agencies.

Among the key topics was the much-anticipated runway extension project, which aims to enable larger aircraft operations and significantly improve flight handling capabilities at the airport. “We are in the process of acquiring land and exploring the possibility of relocating the radar station,” Mohol said. “Additionally, Lohgaon Road will be closed, and a new road will be constructed by the Pune Municipal Corporation. The airport expansion is being meticulously planned keeping in mind traffic demands for the next 50 years.”

Seamless metro connectivity to the airport was another critical point of discussion. Stakeholders stressed that a direct metro link would greatly improve passenger access and integrate the airport more effectively into Pune’s urban transit network.

The committee also discussed new road infrastructure projects aimed at separating airport-bound traffic from regular city traffic, a move expected to ease congestion and enhance road safety in the surrounding areas.

Addressing aviation safety, Mohol emphasized the importance of wildlife hazard management, particularly in mitigating bird and animal activity near the airport. “We are working closely with local authorities to ensure comprehensive measures are in place to enhance safety standards,” he added.

In terms of terminal expansion, the AAC reviewed proposals to repurpose the Old Terminal Building’s arrival hall into a modern check-in facility, in line with the anticipated surge in passenger numbers over the coming years.

Throughout the meeting, sectoral representatives actively contributed their insights, reflecting a strong collaborative spirit. The discussions highlighted the AAC’s commitment to ensuring Pune Airport evolves into a world-class aviation hub capable of meeting future demands.
