Safety or Sensationalism? Pune Cafe’s New Year Campaign Under Fire

Pune, 30th December 2024: A popular nightlife destination in Pune’s Koregaon Park, High Spirits Cafe, has stirred controversy with its unconventional New Year’s Eve safety initiative. As part of the campaign, the cafe sent out invitation packages to regular patrons containing condoms, electrolyte powder, and other items aimed at promoting safe partying practices. However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from the Indian National Congress.
Known for its lively atmosphere, music performances, and bar games, High Spirits Cafe launched the campaign to promote road safety, responsible drinking, hydration, and safe sex during the festive season. The invitation packages also included informational pamphlets and a one-time cab service offer to encourage patrons not to drink and drive.
While the initiative received appreciation on social media for its emphasis on safety, it also attracted backlash. The Maharashtra Youth Wing of the Indian National Congress labeled the campaign as “cheap marketing” and accused the cafe of promoting inappropriate values in a city often referred to as the “Oxford of the East” and the “Cultural Capital” of Maharashtra.
In a letter to Pune Police, the Congress youth wing expressed concern about the distribution of condoms and other items, arguing that it clashed with Pune’s educational and cultural ethos. Akshay Jain, General Secretary of the Maharashtra State Youth Congress, criticized the initiative, stating, “Through social media, we came across the items distributed by High Spirits Cafe. This sends the wrong message. For a city like Pune, which is known for its educational and cultural prominence, such initiatives are inappropriate. While we don’t oppose nightlife, this is nothing but ‘cheap publicity.”
The youth wing demanded strict action against the cafe and urged authorities to ensure that such campaigns are avoided in the future.
In response to the criticism, Zaid Khan, the manager of High Spirits Cafe, explained the intent behind the initiative. “This is all a misunderstanding. Every year, we have a theme for New Year’s Eve, and this year’s theme is ‘party responsibly’ with a focus on safety. Young people often engage in activities like drinking and driving or unprotected sex, ignoring the potential consequences. To address this, we distributed condoms, oral rehydration solutions (ORS), and a card with a chauffeur service number. Additionally, we are offering one-way cab trips to discourage drinking and driving,” he said.
Despite the backlash, many locals have commended the cafe’s efforts to raise awareness about responsible partying. The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between modern nightlife culture and traditional values in Pune.
