Sanatan Sanstha member arrested by CBI in Dr Narendra Dabholkar murder case

Mumbai – About three years after the murder of rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar, who fought against superstitions, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday night made the first arrest.

Dr Virendra Tawde, a member of Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Janjagruti Samiti (HJS), was arrested by the agency after questioning him for several hours on Friday.

Few days back CBI had searched his house near Panvel and also that of Goa blast suspect Sarang Akolkar, also Sanatan Sanstha member, in Pune.

CBI officials said that Tawde will be produced before a special court in Pune on Saturday.

CBI had registered a case on 09.05.2014 on the orders of Bombay High Court dated 09.05.2014, in Criminal Public Interest Litigation and took up the investigation of the case which was initially registered at Deccan Police Station, Pune regarding killing of Dr. Narendra Dabholkar. It was alleged that in the morning at about 7.20 hrs., two un-identified persons aged about 25 to 30 years, of medium height had fired bullets and killed Dr. Narendra Dabholkar, while he was on footpath of Omkareshwar Bridge behind Balgandharv Rangmandir, Pune City.The two assassins fled on a two- wheeler/motorcycle.
