Sanjay Takale successfully completes Asia Cross country rally on Independence Day
Pune, 17th August 2026: Seasoned Pune-based rally driver Sanjay Takale, India’s flagbearer in the world of endurance motorsport, successfully completed the 31st Musashi Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2026 in Thailand, securing 9th position in the T1-D category. Sanjay Takale was among 42 competitors who took on the demanding six-day cross-country rally, also known as Asia’s Dakar, in rallying circles. The rally covered approximately 2,000 kilometres across Thailand.
Driving the iconic Toyota Hilux, Takale battled challenging terrain, long competitive stages and demanding navigation to complete the rally on a high. The result added another strong international finish to Sanjay Takale’s extensive cross-country rallying career.
The 2026 AXCR tested competitors across a wide variety of conditions, with the rally concluding in Phitsanulok on August 15. Sanjay Takale’s consistent performance throughout the event enabled him to complete one of Asia’s toughest cross-country rallies.
The result also carried a special significance for Takale, as the rally concluded on India’s Independence Day.
“It was a great feeling to finish 9th in T1-D in such a demanding rally, with 42 cars competing. To be here in Thailand and hold the Indian flag high on our Independence Day made the moment even more special. The rally tested every aspect of our preparation, and I’m proud that we finished strong,” said Sanjay Takale.
Sanjay Takale has previously delivered notable performances in the Asia Cross Country Rally, including being part of Team Toyota’s fightback to an overall second-place finish last year.
In 2025, Takale was accorded special trophy for showing his amazing rallying skills despite suffering tyre blast leading to a big tyre puncture.
Takale had won Asia Cross Country Rally in 2011.
he 58-year-old Takale has 43 podiums from 48 rallies, which includes championships across Europe and Asia, an APRC title (2012), and WRC outings in Finland.
