Sarang Theatre Fest formerly known as Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival starts from February 25th

7 FEB 2019 , Pune- The most awaited Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival will start from 25th February to 1st March, and it will be known as SARANG Theatre fest now onwards. It is multilingual All India theater fest organises annually in the Pune, cultural capital of Maharashtra. It is Organised by Sahitya Rangbhiomi Pratishthan and supported by Parimal and Pramod Choudhari of Praj Industries.an announcement is made by Ashok Kulkarni, Director of festival and trustee of Sahitya Rangbhiomi Pratishthan in a press conference.
The Theatre festival was started a decade ago by the family members of Vinod Doshi who was a great Theatre artist from Mumbai. From this edition it will be organised by Sahitya Rangbhiomi Pratishthan. It is going to start from 25th February to 1st March at Yashwanrao Chavan auditorium, Kothrud at 7.30pm on all days.
This year’s festival will comprises of as many as five different languages including Hindi-English, Tamil, Marathi, Hindi – Urdu, and Hindi.The opening play of festival is ‘Detective 9-2-11’ script is written by Pallav Singh from National School of Drama and directed by Atul Kumar,which is based on original story, in Hindi-English language,The play is set in Mumbai in the black and white Era. A casual evening at a Theatre quickly turns onto a fast paced chase sequence for the unsuspecting hero when gun shots are fired at the legendary Opera House during a performance. A mysterious woman lands in his arms pleading for help amid mob chaos and he reluctantly agrees, walking right into an international spy ring primed and ready to unleash a treacherous scheme that will disarm the nation, without any warning or heroic intentions our hero finds that he is the only one who can stop this outrageous plan.
On 26th February ‘Davikadun Chouthi Bulding’ will be played in Marathi directed by Suraj Parasnis, the story takes place in the same Housing Society separated by genre, but bound together by one common event an electrical power outage. A former child star turned vlogger struggling to stay relevant, a young couple burdened by the looming danger of an accidental pregnancy, two girls whose new lives are colliding with their earlier sense of belonging and joint family get together that goes awry all these stories from an intricate tapestry of sorts.
On 27th February Tamil play Chandala (impure) will be played directed by Koumarane Valavane with English Surtitles, based in two mythical lovers set in the Indian context of caste discrimination the story was triggered by a few honour killing incidents in Tamil Nadu. It tries to explore the caste system from the point of view of the contemporary Indian Youth how they are coping with this system.
‘Chaheta’, which is in Hindi-Urdu directed by Mohit Takalkar will be on 28 February, three great religions share the story of Abraham binding and nearly sacrificing his son. CHAHETA imagines what happened after father and son come down from the mountain. The play explorers the psychological scars wrought upon Abraham’s son after surviving his traumatic event. Did Abraham bring his young son to the mountain for the purpose of human sacrifice as his wife and son believe or was he simply trying to toughen up his sensitive young son with with a father and son camping trip, as he claims? Did an angel of God intervene on the mountain as scripture dictates? Ultimately this intense allergorical drama attempts to question the sanity and sanctity of people who claim to talk with God.
on 1st March ‘Deewar’ which is in Hindi Language directed by Sunil Shanbag, two rich Zamindar brothers rule over a happy family and harmonious community of peasants. The unexpected arrival of foreign refugees in the beginning of dramatic turn of fortunes. Ruthless machinations by the foreigners split the community and turn brother against brother. First staged in 1945 by Prithviraj Kapoor’s Theatre Deewar is a fascinating allegory of colonization and partition. In 2018 it gives a remarkable insight into a historical moment full of promise for a new nation.
