Ghazipur/Indore, 9th June 2025: In a major breakthrough in the case of the mysterious disappearance of newlyweds Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya, police have recovered Sonam alive—17 days after she went missing. However, the case has taken a shocking turn, with Meghalaya Police now accusing Sonam of orchestrating her husband’s murder.

Sonam was traced to a roadside eatery (dhaba) in the Nandganj area under Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh. She was located late Saturday evening and immediately taken into police custody. Following a preliminary medical check-up at the district hospital, she has been placed under protection at the One Stop Center for women.

Confirming the development, senior police officials from Meghalaya and Uttar Pradesh said Sonam’s recovery may unravel the full sequence of events that began on May 23, when the couple went missing while on their honeymoon in Shillong.

On June 2, the body of Raja Raghuvanshi was found near a waterfall in Meghalaya, raising suspicions of foul play. During the early investigation, bloodstained clothing—reportedly Sonam’s jacket—was also recovered from the area, deepening the mystery.

Now, Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) has officially confirmed that Sonam Raghuvanshi is suspected of masterminding her husband’s murder. According to the DGP, Sonam allegedly hired contract killers to eliminate Raja. Four persons have been arrested in connection with the murder, and police say Sonam has voluntarily surrendered.

“Sonam is under custody and has been safely located. We believe she played a central role in this case and had given a supari (contract) to kill Raja Raghuvanshi. The investigation is now focused on verifying the entire sequence and motive,” said a senior Meghalaya police official.

The disappearance of the couple sparked public and media attention nationwide. Raja’s family had alleged that the hotel staff and some locals in Shillong were involved in foul play. Raja hailed from Madhya Pradesh, and his relatives had called for a high-level probe into the case.

Meanwhile, Sonam’s mother had previously made an emotional appeal for help. “We have been waiting desperately to hear something about our daughter. We demanded a CBI inquiry, hoping it would lead us to her. Every day, our family sat glued to the television, praying for a sign,” she had told reporters last week.

A reward had also been announced for anyone who could provide information leading to Sonam’s location.

As Sonam remains under police custody, both Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh police are expected to jointly interrogate her to uncover the full story behind the alleged murder conspiracy. Further arrests and disclosures are likely as the investigation deepens.
