SPPU Pune Meeting Focuses on Student Welfare and Infrastructure: Higher “Earn and Learn” Pay, Insurance, New Facilities Approved
Pune, 25th April 25, 2026: The Management Council of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Saturday approved a series of key decisions aimed at improving student welfare, academic quality and institutional development during a meeting held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Auditorium on campus.
A major decision was taken to increase wages under the university’s “Earn and Learn” scheme. Students working under the programme will now receive Rs 65 per hour instead of Rs 55. The revision is expected to impose an additional financial burden of nearly Rs 1 crore on the university.
Prioritising student safety, the council also approved continuation of the student accident insurance scheme for the academic year 2026-27, with an allocation of Rs 40 lakh. A committee headed by Principal Nitin Ghorpade has been formed to suggest permanent solutions to issues faced by students during examinations.
In another decision, the honorarium for contractual teaching faculty on campus has been increased from Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 per month, a move aimed at strengthening academic delivery and attracting quality educators.
The university will also continue its partnership with Ruby Hall Clinic for healthcare services on campus, ensuring medical and emergency support for students in the coming year.
To strengthen the Ahilyanagar sub-centre, approval was granted for the appointment of an academic coordinator. Additionally, a committee chaired by Dr. Rajendra Vikhe Patil has been formed to enhance landscaping and improve the visibility of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue on campus.
The council also gave in-principle approval for the development of a world-class dance complex over approximately three acres under a CSR initiative by the Indian Classical Dance Promotion Institute. The proposed centre is expected to promote interaction between internationally renowned artists and performing arts scholars.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Suresh Gosavi said the decisions reflect a balanced approach towards student welfare, academic excellence and cultural development through efficient administration.
