Viman Nagar, 19th December 2024: The Airport police successfully tracked and recovered a stolen car worth Rs 17 lakh from Mira Road in Thane district with the help of a GPS tracker. The car had been rented out by a Pune resident, Mohammad Makani, to a man from Ahmednagar, who failed to return the vehicle after the rental period expired.

Makani, 29, a resident of Dhanori, had rented out his car through a car rental application for a period from December 12 to December 15. However, when the suspect failed to return the vehicle on time, Makani reported the matter to the police.

“I had installed a GPS tracker in the car for security purposes,” said Makani. “When the suspect didn’t return the car as promised, I tracked it down and notified the police.”

The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) on December 17, under sections related to cheating and criminal breach of trust, as per the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Assistant Inspector Chandan Vijay, leading the investigation, said, “Using the GPS tracker, we traced the car to an abandoned location in Mira Road. The vehicle was brought back to Pune, but the suspect was not present in the car.”

The suspect had provided Aadhaar and PAN card details while booking the vehicle. “We are verifying the information provided by the suspect, particularly his address in Ahmednagar, as part of our investigation,” Vijay added. “We’ve also reached out to the car rental company for further details on the suspect’s booking and his travel routes, which will help us gather more evidence.”

The rental agreement was for Rs 5,000 per day, but the suspect not only failed to return the car on time but also did not make any rental payments. “The car was delivered to him as agreed, but he kept it beyond the scheduled rental period and never paid for the additional days,” the officer explained.
