New Delhi, 19th December 2024: As the curtains close on 2024, the Supreme Court of India has emerged as one that defined justice and remade the socio-political structure of the country. It not only delivered justice in landmark cases but also established many legal precedents that went beyond the call of duty as a guardian of the Constitution.

Bilkis Bano Case

Kicking off the year with a ruling, the Supreme Court overturned the Gujarat government’s decision to release 11 convicts early in the Bilkis Bano case. The accused had committed gruesome crimes during the 2002 Gujarat riots and their premature release was described as a miscarriage of justice. The move has marked a different stance taken by the judiciary on the cause of victim rights.

No Revival of Article 370

In a politically charged verdict, the court upheld the abrogation of Article 370, dismissing pleas for its restoration. This decision cemented the 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, emphasizing the central government’s stance on national unity and sovereignty.

Electoral Bonds: A Blow to Corruption

In light of the elections that were due soon, the Supreme Court struck down the Electoral Bond Scheme, labelling it unconstitutional. The court also underscored how the scheme bred political corruption and reiterated the importance of transparency in funding for electoral purposes.

Huge Decision Regarding Reservation

In a landmark decision, the court ratified sub-classification within Scheduled Castes and allowed states to identify and provide targeted quotas for the most marginalized. In this manner, the court adopted a more nuanced approach for uplifting the weakest sections of backward communities, advancing the cause of social justice.

Tougher Stance on Child Pornography

The court stood firm on child pornography by reversing a controversial judgment of the Madras High Court. Declaring the possession and viewing of such material a crime, the court also recommended more sensitive terminology, urging the use of “Child Sexually Abusive and Exploitative Material” (CSEAM).

 Curtailing Bulldozer Justice

In a major step against extrajudicial actions, the court declared “bulldozer justice” unconstitutional. It mandated due process for dealing with illegal constructions, thereby holding people accountable and ensuring citizens’ rights.
