Symbiosis Law School, Pune Joined Hands in the State Call of 2 Crores Tree Plantation

Symbiosis Law School, Pune believes that corporate and social responsibilities go hand in hand, and in the light of this, the college aims at the integration of the environmental conservation and Law.

This vision of combining and connecting Law with hands on practical experience has been embodied in the curricula by Dr. Shashikala Gurpur, Director, Symbiosis Law School, and Dean, Symbiosis International University.

Van Mahotsav or Forest Day is an annual tree-planting festival celebrated from July 1 to 7 across India. Started in 1950 by the ministry of agriculture, millions of saplings are planted during the week to increase green cover in forested and non-forested areas. This year the Government of Maharashtra has undertaken one of the biggest tree plantation drives. Under this scheme, the State had envisaged to plant about 2 crores of trees and in furtherance of this initiative more than 200 students of the 3rd year BA/BBALLB Programme along with ECOCON Cell, SLS, Pune also contributed to tree plantation drive on 1st July, 2016 at Warje Malwadi, Pune.

The sapling plantation took place in the presence of dignitaries like Guardian Minister Girish Bapat, Actor Jackie Shroff, and the Chief Conservator of Forests Mr. Jeet Singh Virk.

The plantation drive took place with zeal and enthusiasm of the students of SLS, Pune who in the spirit of teamwork planted numerous saplings. In this endeavor, they were also assisted and guided by the faculty in-charges as well as the guest faculty Ms. Justice Kristi Harrington, Judge, Ninth Judicial Circuit, U.S.A. and Judge, Circuit Court of South Carolina. Justice Harrington herself planted a couple of trees. After this enthralling experience, the students felt that they were a part of something bigger as they worked alongside volunteers from Corporation and various other educational institutions. This experience inculcated in them the importance of environment and various problems associated with it. The students acquired hands on experience in the practical application of their environmental curriculum.
