Pune – Marathi daily Pudhari has reported that about 50 percent of the 45,000 toilets constructed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) are bogus.

Many of old toilets were just repainted, while in other cases contractors ‘constructed’ toilets on paper only and two members of same family has got the ‘new’ toilets. For constructing the toilet, the central government pay Rs 4,000, state government pay Rs 8,000 and PMC pays Rs 6000, to the each beneficiary.

The toilets have been constructed under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), the pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to end open defecation by October 2, 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Several amilies in the city do not have toilet facilities. They either use the public toilet or defecate in the open. To make the city free of open defecation and ensuring correct procession of solid waste generated is part of the Swacch Bharat Mission.

PMC had also won award from the central government for taking lead in construction of toilets.
