Pune, 23rd October 2026: Traffic police will resume issuing fines for traffic violations from Friday, October 23, after a suspension of challan machines contributed to rising traffic violations and congestion across the city.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Sandeep Bhajibhakre said challan machines would be reintroduced to empower traffic personnel to penalise motorists flouting rules. However, towing operations will remain suspended until a new contract is finalised with the towing service provider.

The use of challan machines and towing operations had been suspended around two months ago. Since then, traffic violations such as illegal parking, triple-seat riding on two-wheelers, driving against traffic and flouting one-way and no-entry restrictions have increased, worsening congestion on key roads.

JM Road, FC Road, Satara Road, Sinhagad Road, Alandi Road and several stretches in the old city have been among the affected routes.

The suspension of enforcement also made it difficult for traffic personnel to deter violators, with commuters reporting longer travel times and poor traffic management at several junctions.

Bhajibhakre said towing would resume once the contract renewal process was completed.
