Two men held in Pimpri for withdrawing money from ATMS after stealing PIN

Pune, May 8: Two men from Haryana have been arrested by Pune city police for allegedly withdrawing money from ATM after customer left the machine following unsuccessful transactions.

The accused used to make the machine ‘hang’, would keep watch on customer’s personal identification number (PIN) from outside and then reactivate the machine to withdraw money using the same password.

The arrested accused has been identified as Akram Mohammad Ali Khan (20) and Asgar Mohammad Safat (20), both residents of Raniala Khurd village in Hathin tehsil of Haryana’s Palwal district.

The arrests were made by officials from Pimpri police station following complaint from Raju Ganpat Rasal (35), a resident of Chinchwadgaon.

According to police, Rasal, who works with a private firm, had gone to ATM of United Bank of India located in Mohan Nagar, Chinchwad, around 2.30 pm on May 6. Two men entered the ATM kiosk and saw his password while engaging him in a talk. When Rasal left the ATM, the accused allegedly withdrew Rs 5,000.

After Rasal lodged an FIR for offences like cheating, theft, the cops launched a search for the accused. The two accused were found loitering around Saraswat Bank ATM near the UBI ATM. Police nabbed them and claimed to have seized Rs 70,000 cash, ATM cards and two mobile phones.

Senior Police Inspector Vivek Muglikar, in-charge of Pimpri police station, told Punekar News, “One of the accused works as truck driver. The duo is hard nuts to crack. Though they have some technical knowledge, they are yet to reveal in detail their modus operandi. We suspect that they are involved in several cases of withdrawing money from ATMs after stealing the password.”

A magistrate court has remanded the accused to two days police custody. Pimpri police have appealed people to contact them on 02027472218, if they have been cheated in similar manner.
