Uttarkashi Tunnel Collapse: Race Against Time to Save 40 Lives, Rescue Operation In Force

Uttarkashi, 14th November, 2023 – An unfortunate incident unfolded in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, where 40 workers remain trapped for over 50 hours in the Silkyara-Pol village tunnel, part of the Chardham project under construction. The ongoing rescue operation is being conducted with urgency, and efforts persist as of today.

On the night of Diwali, a major accident transpired, leading to the entrapment of 40 workers in the Silkyara-Pol village tunnel, a crucial component of the Chardham project in Uttarkashi. The evacuation mission is underway with a war footing approach. An auger drilling machine from Dehradun arrived at 3 o’clock in the night, and the installation process is currently in progress. Additionally, 900 mm pipes have been dispatched to Haridwar and Badarabad to facilitate the rescue. It is anticipated that the trapped workers will be reached by Tuesday.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is actively monitoring the situation surrounding the Uttarkashi tunnel accident. CM Dhami stated, ‘I am closely monitoring the situation. I visited the site and spoke to the family members of the trapped individuals. Supplies of food, water, and oxygen are being ensured for those inside. Prime Minister Modi is also closely monitoring the situation.’

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) led by Commandant Manikant Mishra is spearheading the rescue operation to free the 40 laborers trapped in the tunnel.
