Volkswagen Golf GTI vs Mini Cooper S: Which Is Best in Terms of Engine, Performance, and Size?
Mumbai, 21st May 2025: The Volkswagen Golf GTI is set to launch in India on May 26, 2025, and its pricing will be revealed on the same day. Once launched, it will compete with the Mini Cooper S in the premium hatchback segment. Both models will be brought to India as CBUs (Completely Built Units). Here, we compare the two cars in terms of engine, performance, size, and price to find out which one offers the better overall package.
1. Dimensions
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is bigger than the Mini Cooper S in almost every aspect. It measures 4282 mm in length, 1789 mm in width, and 1483 mm in height. In comparison, the Mini Cooper S is smaller with dimensions of 3876 mm in length, 1744 mm in width, and 1432 mm in height.
The Golf GTI also has a longer wheelbase at 2620 mm, compared to the Cooper S’s 2495 mm. The Golf uses 225/40 R18 tyres, while the Cooper S comes with 215/45 R17 tyres. Boot space in the Golf GTI is 381 liters, whereas the Mini Cooper S offers 210 to 725 liters depending on the rear seat configuration. In addition, the Golf GTI is a 5-door car whereas the Mini Cooper S is a 3-door hatchback.
2. Engine and Performance
Both hatchbacks are powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. However, the Golf GTI delivers more performance with 265 horsepower and 370 Nm of torque. The Mini Cooper S produces 204 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque.
The Golf GTI accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.9 seconds, while the Cooper S takes 6.6 seconds. Top speed is also higher in the Golf GTI at 250 km/h (electronically limited), compared to the Cooper S’s 242 km/h.
3. Price
The base price of Mini Cooper S is ₹44.90 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. Classic Pack is priced at ₹50.45 lakh, Favoured Pack at ₹53.40 lakh, and JCW Pack is available up to ₹55.90 lakh.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI’s price will be officially announced at launch, but it is expected to be around ₹52 lakh (ex-showroom).
