Waiter to Reporter – Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Once again the social media is abuzz with acting of versatile actor Nawazudin Siddiqui, with his latest role in box office blockbuster Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Salman Khan in the lead role.

Who is Nawazuddin Siddiqui ? Born in a farmer’s family in Badhana town of Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, the 42-year-old actor grew up among nine siblings – seven brothers and two sisters.

While he was growing up in the 1970s there was no television in his house and the only source of entertainment was folk performances and village fairs.
A born performer and keen observer, Nawazuddin would entertain everyone by mimicking people.

After graduating in science from Gurukul Kangri University in Haridwar, he worked as a chemist for some time in a petrochemical company. However it was job of a watchman at a theatre group that brought him to his destiny – performance. He would watch artists during plays and practice.

The passion for acting and to explore his talent brought him to the famous National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi. After graduating from there, he worked in some plays and then moved to the city of dreams Mumbai in 2000.

From getting roles in bits and pieces, from 1 minute roles to lead roles, he has done all. But all these came at a price – tough struggle for 12 years before success came calling after his role of an IB officer in highly acclaimed movie Kahaani.

In between he did many roles but was not noticed by anyone. Nawaz says that he came to Mumbai to act in TV serials but nobody gave him any roles and he landed in films. A time came when he had no money to pay rent. He had to live with his senior from NSD on the condition that he would cook for him. Nawazuddin also took acting classes for livelihood besides in acting in C-grade films.

In 1999, he played character of waiter in Shool played that of criminal 1 arrested through victoria house in Aamir Khan starrer Sarfarosh. In 2003, he acted as a pickpocketer Sanjay Dutt’s Munna Bhai MBBS. In Black Friday he plays Asgar Muqadam, while he did a cameo in Emotional Atyachar song in Dev D.

He was noticed for his role of a TV journalist in Peepli Live in 2010. After that he received rave reviews for his performances in films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Talaash, Kick and Badlapur. Not only Bollywood, he has proved his mettle at the global level by winning several prestigious awards at international film festivals.

Now his role of a reporter in Bajrangi Bhaijaan is getting applauds from everyone. From a rejected actor, he has become National Award winner hero. Now he has become choosy about his characters and often rejects film scripts. In the last four years he has rejected over 100 scripts.
Nawazuddin is married to Anjali for the last five years and the couple has a daughter named Shora.

Nawazuddin believes that being a farmer’s son he has always been inclined towards khetibadi (agriculture). He plans to buy land near Pune so that he can do farming and come to Mumbai to pursue his passion i.e. acting.
