“We Want Garden”: Gen Alpha Takes to Streets in Wakad, Demands Garden Near EON IT Park
Wakad, 17th August 2026: A group of children from the Gen Alpha generation staged a protest near the proposed garden site adjacent to EON IT Park at Wakadkar Corner in the Bhumkar Chowk area, demanding that the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) develop the garden at the same location.
The children raised slogans including “We Want Garden,” “Garden Zalech Pahije” (We Want the Garden) and “We Need a Garden for Our Future,” drawing attention to the demand for open and green spaces in the rapidly developing area.
The proposed garden has reportedly been the subject of objections and suggestions invited by the civic body earlier. Residents had subsequently expected the garden project to move forward. However, citizens now allege that PCMC officials and local representatives have not provided clear information about the status of the proposal.
Residents have also raised questions over the availability of information concerning the project. According to them, attempts to obtain details through the Right to Information (RTI) process have not received a satisfactory response, prompting concerns over the status of the proposed garden.
Against this backdrop, the children took the initiative to visit the proposed site and voice their demand. They called for the garden project not to be cancelled and insisted that the green space be developed at the location originally proposed next to EON IT Park, said Adv Vikas Shinde.
The protesters said children today need more than access to smartphones, the internet and technology. They also require open spaces, greenery, playgrounds and a clean environment for their physical and social development.
Residents and the organisers warned that any attempt to cancel the garden proposal or shift it away from the identified site would face opposition.
They demanded that the PCMC administration immediately clarify its position on the project, assure residents that the proposal will not be scrapped and initiate work on the garden at the proposed site near EON IT Park.
The organisers further warned that if the civic administration fails to take a concrete decision soon, a larger protest would be organised under the leadership of Gen Alpha.
The Wakad-Tathawade Housing Forum, representing Gen Alpha in the protest, said the issue was not limited to present-day residents but concerned the availability of green spaces for future generations.
“A garden is not merely an issue for today’s residents; it is a question of the rights of tomorrow’s generation. Therefore, the garden must be developed at the proposed site itself.”
The forum has urged the PCMC Commissioner and civic administration to recognise the importance of the demand and protect the proposed green space for future generations.
