WhatsApp Introduces AI-Powered Backgrounds for Video Calls on Android and iOS

New Delhi, 3rd September 2025: WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms, has rolled out a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature allowing users to customize video call backgrounds. The feature, powered by Meta AI, is now available on both Android and iOS devices.

This new option joins the existing features that let users blur their background or choose from preset images. Unlike preset options, the AI-powered background generation allows users to create personalized backgrounds based on text prompts.

According to WhatsApp, the feature becomes visible once a video call begins. Users can access it by tapping the magic wand icon on the right side of the video call interface. After swiping through the existing background options at the bottom of the screen, users will see a new option called “Create with AI.” Here, they can type a description of the background they want, and the AI will generate it in real time.

WhatsApp announced the feature via a post on its social media platform X, emphasizing the ease of creating customized video call environments. While the company has confirmed the use of Meta AI, it has not disclosed the specific AI model powering this functionality.

With this update, WhatsApp aims to enhance user experience by making video calls more engaging and personalized, keeping pace with competitors offering AI-driven call features.
