WHO approves emergency use of Pfizer’s Corona vaccine, India will also decide today
Mumbai, 1 January 2021: The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the emergency use of Pfizer and BioNtech’s Corona vaccine. A vaccine has been recognized by the WHO for the first time since the outbreak of the corona epidemic. This WHO decision has paved the way for countries around the world to use the vaccine.
The World Health Organization’s approval of Pfizer’s vaccine means that now this vaccine will be available to poor countries as well. Until now, this vaccine was available only in Europe and North America. Drug regulatory agencies of respective countries approve any Covid-19 vaccine on their behalf, but countries with weak systems usually depend on the WHO for this.
The WHO said on Thursday that its decision to approve the emergency use of Covid-19 vaccines would allow countries to speed up the approval process of their regulators to import and administer vaccines. The agency informed that the vaccine produced by Pfizer-BioNotech has met the safety standards and other parameters set by the organization.
Significantly, many countries including the US, UK and European Union have approved this vaccine. This vaccine has to be kept at a very low temperature, which is a major challenge for developing countries.
Today will be decided in India
The Committee of Experts of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) considered the request of the Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech to allow the emergency use of the Covid-19. The expert committee on Covid-19 analyzed additional details submitted by the Serum Institute of India and Bharat Biotech. The Health Ministry said in a statement that the committee met later this afternoon to consider the request of Serum Institute of India, Pfizer and Bharat Biotech Pvt Ltd to allow emergency use of vaccines. It said that the committee would meet again today.
