WOMEN IN AVIATIONINTERNATIONAL (INDIA CHAPTER) AND LOCKHEED MARTIN CELEBRATE GIRLS IN AVIATION DAY IN VARANASI, UTTAR PRADESH
28 NOV 2018 :The initiative aims to introduce girls to the possibilities available in a career in aviation
Varanasi/ New Delhi, November 28, 2018:Women in Aviation International, India Chapter
and Lockheed Martin India in association with Airports Authority of India (AAI) today
celebrated Girls in Aviation Day at Varanasi Airport,Uttar Pradesh. With the vision to
encourage girls to take up STEM subjects and explore
career opportunities in related industries, the initiative is aimed at showcasing opportunities
in the aviation and aerospace sectors. This initiative also aligns with the Government of
India’s ‘Skill India’ initiative.
As part of the program, Women in Aviation International (India Chapter) invited 80 students
from various schools for a tour of the VaranasiAirport. Visiting students were given an
opportunity to explore, learn, and discover the various aspects of aviation and aerospace
such as air traffic controller, airline dispatch, pilot, aviation maintenance technician,
aeronautical engineer or aviation management. In addition, the girl students were given a
tour of the ATC Tower, Airside, Terminal Building as well as AOCC and all their queries and
questions were answered by the officials working in the respective departments.
Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Radha Bhatia, President, Women in Aviation International,
India Chapter shared,” This is the third year that the WAIIndia Chapter is celebrating ‘Girls in
Aviation Day’ and we are delighted to host the same inVaranasi. This day is celebrated for
the young girls to encourage them to choose aviation as a viable career opportunity. World
over India has the maximum number of female pilots but there are many other avenues that
are still unknown. With this celebration our aim is to see girls from the state of Uttar
Pradeshexplore exciting careers available to them as engineers, air traffic controllers and
dozens of other jobs within the aviation
“We will continue our endeavour to introduce young girls to role models and educate them in
a fun and supportive atmosphere. We are very fortunate to be able to partner with Airport
Authority of India for this initiative. Their efforts in leading youth into STEM careers is truly
commendable.” added Mrs. Bhatia.
Speaking about Lockheed Martin’s commitment to this initiative, Mr. Phil Shaw, Chief
Executive, Lockheed Martin India Private Limited said, “This edition of Girls in Aviation Day,
in partnership with Women in Aviation (India chapter) is the fifth such event this year which
offers young women the chance to be exposed to career possibilities they too can achieve
one day, should they pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

from strength to strength, and we look forward to helping develop the next generation
of engineers, explorers and scientists in India.”
Post the airport tour, the students were given a small presentation about the industry and its
intricacies. Also, representative from Women in Aviation InternationalIndia Chapter, Mrs
Noopurr R Chablani- Secretary- Women in Aviation International organized an impromptu
quiz competition added to the delight of the students who also won small tokens as
prizes.Students also received an opportunity to interact Mr Anil Kumar Rai, Airport Director,
Varanasi Airport.
