PCERF felicitated awardees of ‘Kumar Beharay Construction Safety Awards’

​ ​Pune, February 14, 2018: To promote and enhance the implementation of safety at construction sites city based Non- Government Organisation (NGO), Pune Construction Engineering Research Foundation (PCERF) initiated Construction Safety Awards. City Corporation Ltd. won the Debut Award for its project, Amanora Park Town- Gateway Towers and was felicitated with gold trophy along with other winners in a ceremony held at Constro 2018, international fair on construction organised by PCERF in association with ABEC Exhibitions & Conferences Pvt. Ltd recently at Agriculture College Ground, Shivaji Nagar.

The Chief Guest is Lt. General Michael Matthews(AVM), Commandant, College of Military Engineering along with Guest of Honour Ashok Beharay, Director, Beharay Rathi Group of Companies, Keynote speaker A. K. Kulkarni, Senior Construction Safety Expert, Vishwas Lokare, President PCERF & Chairman Constro 2018, Mujtaba Lokhandwala, Convener, Safety Committee, Constro 2018, Neelkanth Joshi, Hon. Secretary, PCERF and Sanjay Vaichar, Vice President, PCERF were also present.

Construction Safety Awards was introduced under PCERF’s Construction Safety Forum address a very important need of the construction industry i.e Safety. This 5th in the series award are graciously supported by Kumar Beharay Properties LLP and award is known as PCERF – Kumar Beharay Construction Safety Awards. Apart from the award, this forum also conducts lectures, seminars and site visits.

While explaining the value of the awards, Ashok Beharay said, “Safety has always been a concern and implementation of safety at construction site should be made compulsory. With this association, we are trying to best to spread awareness and promote safety at all levels.” He also requested all the work force at the site to take precise personal care when it comes to safety.

Talking about importance of Safety, Kulkarni said, “We can’t blame the worker to be careless in fact it is the management that is careless. So, the approach to safety must go beyond helmet and belt and an effective safety cycle must be put in place at the site to achieve that. Safety Department, regular training and detailed policies will help improving the safety culture.”

The awards are given in three categories, considering the different nature of the work at sites. They are Industrial, Commercial, Residential, Infrastructure and Debut Company – the best among those who are participating for the first time. This year there were 25 participation entries at the awards.

The gold in Industrial category was won by Scon Projects Pvy. Ltd for its project Enzene Biosciences Ltd. In Commercial category it was Millennium Engineers & Contractors Pvt. Ltd. who won gold for their project G2 Building, K Raheja IT Campus, Kharadi. Godrej Properties Limited bagged the award in Residential category for their project Godrej Infinity. Gold in Infrastructure was given to J Kumar CRTG (JV) for their tremendously challenging work of Mumbai Metro. All the participants and winners are felicitated with certificate and trophy.

Though the awards are called as Construction Safety Awards, they take holistic view of the situation and consider the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) aspects of construction projects. The assessment is done in two parts: Part 1 – The HSE system in place and Part 2 – How the system and intentions of the management are implemented on the ground.

The process of assessment is designed to induce learning and enhancement of safety and as such goes through various stages of orientation, Planned Site Visit, Surprise Site Visit and Feedback. The score of both visits is then compiled and is considered out of a maximum of 2500. The percentage score decides the winner.

Vishwas Lokare exclaimed, “In the last 5 years since the awards have been instituted, there has been a substantial improvement in the scenario, thereby indicating that the system of awards have been able to make significant contribution to the industry and society at large.”

Lastly, A special category of award i.e PCERF Ferrocement Award was given to P. J. Varghese by the Chief Guest Dr Rajendra Pawar, Director General, MERI, Nashik for constructing a ferrocement building. Varghese’s bungalow in Kerala was designed and constructed by Biji John, Ferrotechnologies, Chenganacherry. Ferrocement Society of India who has its head office in Pune is actively promoting this primitive technology which provides solutions for earthquake resistant houses. Ferrocement is one of the components in GREEN housing concepts. PCERF had called for the best ferrocement structure entries from Indian constructors.
