Pune on the verge of ‘Smart City, Silent City’

11 th January 2017: We are used to the sounds we hear in everyday life, since this is the gift of modern living, industrialization and urbanization. While for many of us, the concept of pollution is limited to nature and resources. All of this has become a part of the urban culture and has started to cause harm to humans on a large scale. Who is responsible for all of this? Ofcourse we – the so called literates of the society!

However, noise that tends to disrupt the natural rhythm of life makes for solid pollutant. Our environment is such that it has become difficult to escape;Noise-pollution;. Noting this alarming situation it has become a necessity to understand and take preventive measures to curb it in time. Theater artist Yogini Pophale in association with Regional Transport Department, Pune and Progressive Education Society organized a public awareness program to create safety awareness in the society towards the tremendously rising growth rate of noise pollution. The program was initiated under the movement;Smart City, Silent City, Pune City;. Dr. Rajendra Jhunjarrao -Principal Modern College, Shyamkant Deshmukh: Secretary-Progressive Education Society, Babasaheb Ajari: Head of RTO, Sanjay Raut:Deputy RTO were the guests of honour on the occasion. This program was held on Tuesday in the auditorium of centrally located city's Modern College of Engineering.

Unless timely action is taken we have a morbid and bleak future for the world.Observing the devastation taking place due to noise pollution it is clear that movements like these have to be crafted for the safety of mankind. ‘No-horns’ is the brainchild of Sanjay Raut, who narrated incidents from his experience. Also, at the same time he said that, “today’s youth is tomorrows face and that their imagination is power packed they should let a helping hand in this movement to let is spread and reach as many counts through various platforms. Hon. National Green Tribunal has issued guidelines to control noise pollution. Pune is an upcoming smart city. With the promotion of "no honking” we can make Pune a Silent City and we can enjoy the peaceful environment of Smart city. With this motive RTO has initiated mission of Smart city Silent City Pune City; added Sanjay Raut.

Skits were performed depicting the necessity of awareness. A competition based on questions related to traffic and signal rules seek the attention of the youth present, wherein helmets were gifted by the RTO department, Pune.  A one man act accompanied by a ‘Bharud’ performance was performed by Swamini Kulkarni was a high peak to the event which left the audience in wonders. The program concluded with an oath ceremony towards no honking taken by the attendees in the presence of the dignitaries. A count of 700 students witnessed the oath ceremony. Sankarshan
