Pune: Software Engineer Drowns in Pavana Dam Backwaters

Lonavla, 26th February 2024: A 25-year-old engineer employed with a prominent software company in Hinjawadi died due to drowning in the backwaters of Pavana dam at Phangane village near Lonavla on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Mayank Akhilesh Upadhyay, originally hailing from Panipat in Haryana, was enjoying a day out near Pavana dam with four of his friends when the incident occurred.

A swift response from the Lonavla rural police team ensued after receiving the distress call. They successfully retrieved Upadhyay from the water and promptly transported him to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of the medical professionals, Upadhyay was pronounced dead.

According to an officer from the Lonavla rural police, the group had entered the water for a swim when Upadhyay encountered difficulties. “His friends raised an alarm, and local residents joined in the search for him,” the officer explained.

The police were alerted to the incident around 1 pm, and with the assistance of the local community, they managed to bring Upadhyay out of the water within 15 minutes.
