New Delhi, 23rd November 2023: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released a notice offering candidates who have cleared their 10+2 exams with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as core subjects and by clearing a biology/biotechnology examination at the 10+2 level from any recognized board, would qualify as potential medical candidates

NMC highlighted that candidates who have supplemented their educational qualifications with the requisite subjects—physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology, and English—after passing Class XII will now be eligible to sit for the NEET-UG test. This test is crucial for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in India. Additionally, these individuals will also qualify for an eligibility certificate, which acts as legal validation from the NMC, affirming their eligibility to pursue undergraduate medical courses overseas.

Previously, it mandated a continuous two-year study of physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology with practicals, alongside English, during Classes XI and XII from a regular school. The old criteria necessitated the study of biology/biotechnology as a core subject during this period, disallowing candidates from open schools or those classified as ‘private’ candidates.

The revised guidelines from the NMC come after deliberations on June 14, acknowledging the increased flexibility in subject choices permitted under the National Education Policy (NEP). This decision seeks to align with the NEP’s emphasis on providing students with a more adaptable framework for their Class XII studies.
