110 Motorists Penalised on Day One After Pune Traffic Police Enforce New Speed Limits on Katraj Bypass
Ambegaon Budruk, 26th November 2025: The Pune Traffic Police have started enforcing newly introduced speed limits on the Katraj Bypass, penalising 110 motorists for overspeeding on the first day of implementation. The move comes in the wake of the recent fatal crash near Navale Bridge that claimed seven lives and sparked public outcry over road safety.
Speed-limit signboards have been installed along the stretch between the Swaminarayan Temple and Vadgaon Bridge. Additionally, a patrol vehicle equipped with a speed gun has been deployed near Bhumkar Chowk to monitor violations in real time.
As per the directive issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav, the maximum permissible speed for all vehicles from Bhumkar Bridge to Navale Bridge has been capped at 30 kmph. The restriction does not apply to emergency responders such as fire brigade vehicles, ambulances and police units.
Officials said that strict enforcement began soon after the accident. Traffic Police Inspector Sunil Gawli stated that 5,620 motorists have been fined since the incident, leading to a total penalty collection of ₹33.05 lakh. In a special drive conducted between October 15 and November 14 alone, 863 offenders were booked and fines worth ₹17.63 lakh were imposed.
The highway stretch includes several lodges and commercial establishments, and damaged medians and barricades had previously allowed vehicles to take illegal turns onto the bypass, increasing accident risk. These openings have now been repaired by highway authorities, confirmed Senior Police Inspector Sharad Zhine of Ambegaon Police Station.
